Intelligent Interfaces

Creating a system in which humans and computers coexist

Let's look at computers and humans as a single system. This will give us an idea of the kind of technology we should be pursuing now. From brain science to information technology, a variety of knowledge will be used to generate new concepts and foster the thought processes that will make these concepts a reality.

What is Intelligent Interface?

With the remarkable development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology, we are entering an era where decisions and processing by AI will be a natural part of people's lives. We are already seeing examples of smart speakers interacting with humans, and AI making moves in Shogi and Go that far surpass those of humans.

However, AI needs to evolve further in order for the different types of intelligence, "human" and "computer," to coexist and ultimately enrich our lives. In this research field, through further understanding and exploration of electronics and information engineering, we are working on research and technology development to realize artificial intelligence that can coexist with humans and enrich society.

For example, we are working on reinforcement learning to learn game strategies from scratch, and on evolutionary methods to transform, synthesize, and select data structures by mimicking the evolutionary mechanisms of living organisms, with the aim of realizing computers that learn more intelligently. We are also working on the development of AI technologies that are closely related to human life by quantitatively expressing human unconsciousness and intuition, such as evaluating the differences in pronunciation of various foreign languages and recommending users' desired properties through image processing of real estate floor plan information. We are also working on information processing technology that can make decisions at high speed and with accuracy in quantities that humans cannot handle, through the realization of image and video processing technology and automatic translation technology that utilize large amounts of data.

Through this research, we are producing technologies that contribute to society, and we are also producing human resources who are active on a global scale by utilizing the diverse technical skills and knowledge acquired through the development of these technologies.

Human Behavior Analysis by Computer Vision

In our laboratory, we are engaged in research in the field of computer vision, which deals with the understanding of images and video. This includes measurement and understanding of human gaze and motion, recognition of individual and group activities, acquisition and analysis of spectral information such as reflections and fluorescence that cannot be perceived by the human eye, and face recognition that is robust to illumination variations.
